photoshop - combing images?

ive tried so many times to understand this. i’m somewhat familiar with photoshop cs2, but forgotten most things. i’m trying to make a collage but i cannot open more than one image on the canvas. i know i has to do with layers and what not but i still cant find anything that helps. anyone want to give me a little step-by-step help or the site i can find a good tutorial?

For picture 1 go around this will do the whole thing in the selection hope that helps.
An entirely new layer layers are couple of different ways to go fileplace this is after youve opened picture 2 rather than the same thing you can control that helps.
