I’m making a Christmas collage and I need to re-size a bunch of pictures. I really enjoy editing pictures and I’d like to do more than lighten/darken, crop, reduce redeye, but I’ve never had photoshop and don’t understand all the gobbledygook of gimp.

Paint.net. It takes time to learn to use - but you can do anything with that software that you can with the expensive software. It is free to download. You can find tutorials online to help you use it.

Picasa is very very good. It doesn’t have a lot of the features that photoshop does, obviously, but it does quite a bit. You can also try Picnik.com, it’s slow going, but it has alot of fun editing tools.
