How do I fade a photo onto a background on Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended please?

Hey. I’m creating a ‘collage’ of sorts for my friend, which a gradient-created background, some font, some shapes and I want to put a picture of her, but I want to fade it in so it looks a bit more professional.

    The opacityi think it will look transparent.
