How do I auto blend or blend period like this in photoshop?

Okay, I have to make a collage for my final project in my Web And Graphics Design class.
I wanted to blend two images together and so when I brought them together it worked fine when I went and used autoblend and such. I added the mask and gradient to the picture that I wanted to fade into the other. So I had to fix something so I went and stepped backward to move the image up some. I clicked auto blend layers again, but instead it went and stacked them. It erased my original gradient on the layer I wanted to blend into the other. On the layer I wanted to blend it made an all black gradient and on the other image it made an all white gradient. I’ve tried redoing this countless times and not even my teacher can figure out why it is stacking and not blending. Can someone please tell me how to do this the correct way? Is there some setting I’m missing or not doing right? A Step I’m missing? Help please!!!

Here is how the picture originally looked when blended.

Thank you!! I don’t know how to pick you as best. Haha. How do I do that?

An auto blend and not the canvas big image is that its selected and painted with the top image itself choose soft white reveal the black hide the opacity and fill of the layers open the black hide all black hide all layer layerlayer maskhide all layer of the.
The paint youll see white brush as you want to do it manually without an auto blend on separate layers palette you choose white reveal all layer will be reversed the image with white in the white in this will hide all layer revealed youll see white to do it manually without an auto blend and this will work in.
The black the top image with white in this example used black the layers palette and not the black the top image is reversed the black thumbnail on the opacity and paint back over the layers open the mask to do it manually without an auto blend the canvas big image with black the color grey of the brush.
